Dune- Portafolio Tutorial ｢(ﾟﾍﾟ)

Hi y'all!
this is an intended help for my student at the university, where I am showing  some samples of step by step easy to do images for portafolio, that will come handy for any art student that its coming to start their own portafolio , in order to be prepared for a profesional life in animation or art design ... 

My sample Project will be about the  Science Fiction Novel from Frank Herbert´s  DUNE:
This it is what we know as theme;Witch it is an important issue to have, in every portafolio that will be shown to an studio, this is helpful for 3 main reason : 

#1- Any studio will be dealing with a story and  YOU will be  hire as an artist within your own special skills,  to solve  it!  

#2- Shows that you can deal with diversity in your art,  and that you can customize a project that will appeal to the studio that you are trying to get in. 

#3-It is easier to be sold as an artist for the quality that you do in art with a theme that many will understand,   rather than be 100% original in a story of your own.. Why? - Because  many people wont understand it, they don´t know it , its new, and for this very reason you art could be lost in translate all those emotions or meanings that a story that we already know gave us,  and this will be a step back to sell your own specials skills.. that if its is to write stories, a visual portafolio wont be the best way to do  it, since it is not a final product. like a comic book or a graphic novel to name a few...

Now We must first came up with a cover, this will help you to sell your theme and also the main thing you like to do: 
Concept art : Get the best  cinematic composition possible, and good art fundamentals in all you do , realistic or cartoon art will depend on the studio it is going to be for.
Visual development : then you must sell stylised cartoons that can be animated with visual story telling values.
Editorial Illustrator: Show a stunning composition that  can encase your unique art direction and art Technics, with out sacrificing the story and theme that will be told in a book.
Comic or Graphic Novel: Get the best impact composition that will show how well you can tell a whole story with just one cover image... do not forget that this art wont be in motion so you must add that cense of movement by your own choices .. 
Story Board: MUST be Cinematic, well composed values, nice contrast between the narrative and very easy to see what its going on ... be entertained on any shoot you choose .. 
Graphic or Industrial Design. Be clean, don get to many elements in one image,  be organized, and be graceful to show what is the personality you do in the design you make. this cover it is your first or last impression to many ... 

So here it is first I will start thumbnails using only abstract figures and simple colors to get my image of what a need to render or not in a simple shape... After that I go to render some sketches on top of those to be more prepared i do some thumbs on the silhouettes for the character that will be there, I always go for the main characters that will be more easy to relate with the theme I have..

I put as an example , the first process in visual development  in a main character for an animated production, that many studios have. 

This image sows, how every artist must think in the design , with the aspect of her acting in the story, with some clear style that will be more in development later, then  the world she or he comes from , and the close friends,. or companions she/he,  learn to be around within  the beginning of the story.

This is an image that is the first impression from the character and her world to all  of us, this is an image we all  have in any character in any story : so it  must be successful at  selling this character ! 

This process of drawing is kinda like you where  a casting director, you must  make a decision for the role for each concept in here,  such as the sets (BG) that your production will be showing in  the story

 If this first impression does goes the right way , I can keep going with the development , in case this does not feels natural to the story , then its time to make more research and more drawing!

Les dejo a la poderosa madre de Ak-Van , " Ayuk":  quien fue una importante líder del ejercito de los Kofdas, su apodo por quienes la conocieron en batalla era: Colmillo Venenoso, ya que venia del ejercito de los Lobos de sangre en su ciudad natal, ella usaba tecnológica y armas que podían ser mortales con el tacto para sus enemigos.Era una excelente estratega, mostrando su ingenio cuando libero de varias batallas contra los ejércitos de las arañas, a las ciudades de los Kofdas.

Pues mi musa mejor conocida como “ Mamá Hongo” y también uno de mis clientes mas difíciles de complacer ( debo añadir)  Fue su aniversario ! Y para celebrarlo siempre le hago una tarjeta ! ^_^ espero esta le guste ! ^_^

Aún no salgo yo ahí , ya que esta en votación : si me voy a pintar con las enanas ( mis hijas del reino animal )  en modo chibi, o me are en alguna forma animal! y como el espacio es algo reducido, pues no se....  U_U ?

Regina Pure Goddess of the crystal

This is one of my dearest character´s on my original history called Avel. He is a new and young galactic sorcerer where he lives in an alternative dimension where elemental beings of the universe gather to create new worlds, he is responsible for the element of fire under the influence of the violet ray ( there´s 7 different color rays ) his power it´s transmutation, and his weapon it´s the unique Lemuria's mighty crystal, witch serves as an amplifier for his own magic, and a door to call from higher dimension the guardian of transmutation called the Goddess Regina, she can transmute all harmful particles of conscience ( living organism ) into pure light , see her as a filter of bad guys, or she send this being into a more popper home ( lower dimensions) recycle law, witch are all over the Universe! she may manifest her self as a ghost since her body can not longer be at presence on the dimension Avel it´s in!
Though he can call her for very limited time, since it is him whom opens the link to the dimension where she is, and that takes lot´s of magic!

This is a sample of what a commission will look like if they are characters in there!

The character name- Avel and his whole wide world!!! where Kofda his pet and protector, and Regina a goddess presence from another higher dimension can be summoned to clear up the battle field.

The Shadow Syndicate- Thor´s Assassin Comic

more updates on the color concept of Drath his original version had green on the wings and armor though I changed a bit I guess the final result will depend on Thor A.






This is it! the main concept for the composition on the poster where the 5 members from the Shadow Syndicate will appear! I am kind aplseased with them.. I thought I was going to crop them more, but I think I do not need to make them in the cliche portrait closeups, since that will give more importance to some of them ... what do you think?

The Dark Lord ¨Krisium¨ he may do anything whit out light´s presence, so beware for his blood thirst ! he can call dark minions and he posses one of the 5 elements to call for the terrible Fenrir beast! the feather of a crow or raven ...I wonder what´s the difference?

The master mind and best player of getting his victims trapped in torture, genius and inventor called ¨Alan Hawk¨ he uses lot´s of steam punk gadgets, so makes a cool look all over him!

The Fire breather and winged demigod called ¨Drath¨ color coming out next... and some sirius damage on fire around!! just think demoniac dragon when it comes to him!


The Ocean terror from the deeps called ¨Gooroen¨ I need more space on her canvas to show the webbed hands and feet, as well to make some teletrasportaion water hole in the air where she is coming from!

PANDA DESIGN! witch means talk!

Hi There !! ^_^
well lot´s of animals....this is for a project called PANDA witch means talk in italian, and that´s pretty much all I can say so far, the idea it´s to make a cartoon pet , in different approaches to get him talk with others. firstly they thought just one, then I orginezed better the sketch where if you have one character talking, means he or her will be in touch with some one else, so I expanded that idea a bit further. and this is why there´s a bunch of guy talking !

Hi World, Hola Mundo, Here´s a a piece of my mind

Since I remember..... I had this idea, Why not I can´t make things that will inspire the imagination to others? So we can all have a better world with wiser generations full of enthusiasm to make the difference on the positive side, Because let´s face it we are not getting a very productive generation now days, all we now it´s about shopping and getting money to do so...disgusting I say!

So when consuming it´s not the answer in our current planet situation, why not CREATING?

I can make art, so I will use it to create imagination to all those minds that are ready to leave with out fear & they want to follow whom they choose to be for real!
